4-methylbenzophenone
Description
4-Methylbenzophenone (CAS 134-84-9) is a photoinitiator and UV-reactive intermediate used across polymer processing, coatings, and printing industries. It absorbs UV radiation to initiate photochemical reactions, enabling rapid curing and cross-linking in light-triggered systems.
In UV-curable coatings and inks, it acts as a photoinitiator that triggers polymer cross-linking upon UV exposure. This process produces hard, durable surface finishes without the need for thermal processing during the manufacturing cycle.
Printing and packaging converters use it in energy-curable ink formulations where fast cure speeds are essential. These formulations meet low migration potential requirements, which are critical process standards for modern industrial printing applications.
In adhesive and sealant systems, it supports photoinitiated bonding in specialized applications. This is particularly useful where heat-sensitive substrates rule out conventional curing methods that require high temperatures to set.
Polymer stabilizer blends also incorporate it as a UV-stabilizing component to protect plastic substrates. This protection prevents photodegradation over the service life of the material, ensuring long-term structural integrity and appearance.
4-Methylbenzophenone is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline solid for industrial use. It is available in technical grade for formulation, with purity specifications typically at 99% or above for photoinitiator-grade applications.
Packaging ranges from kilogram quantities for laboratory and formulation development to bulk drum supply. This flexibility supports both small-scale testing and large-scale industrial production volumes for global chemical distributors.
