Sucrose
Description
Sucrose (CAS 57-50-1), also known commercially as saccharose, is the refined crystalline sugar sourced from sugarcane and sugar beet that underpins sweetening, preservation, and functional formulation across multiple industries.
Beyond its role as a bulk sweetener, it functions as a humectant, chelating agent, and excipient carrier in both food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. In food production, it controls water activity to extend shelf life.
This versatile ingredient is used in confectionery, baked goods, jams, and beverages while simultaneously delivering sweetness and body. Pharmaceutical manufacturers rely on it as a tablet coating agent and syrup base.
It also serves as a lyoprotectant to stabilize biologics and sensitive active ingredients during freeze-drying. In personal care formulations, it acts as a humectant and mild chelating agent in creams and scrubs.
These cleansing products help to bind trace metal ions that would otherwise degrade formula stability. Industrial fermentation processes also consume it as a primary carbon source for producing bioethanol and organic acids.
The material is supplied as white crystalline granules or fine powder in a range of particle sizes to suit different processing requirements. Standard grades include food-grade, FCC, USP, and Ph.Eur.
Pharmaceutical-grade material meets strict purity and endotoxin specifications for sensitive applications. Bulk supply is available in bags and bulk tanker quantities depending on the specific grade and application.
