Aniline
Description
Aniline (CAS 62-53-3), also known historically as Kyanol, is a primary aromatic amine that serves as a foundational building block across dye manufacturing, polymer chemistry, and rubber processing.
Its reactivity toward electrophiles and isocyanates makes it a critical intermediate in producing finished industrial materials rather than an end product in itself. In polyurethane production, aniline reacts with formaldehyde to form MDA.
This serves as the precursor to MDI, one of the highest-volume isocyanates used in rigid foam and elastomer manufacturing. Textile and leather processors rely on aniline-derived dyes and azo pigments for stable coloration.
These pigments achieve deep, stable coloration on synthetic and natural fibers. Rubber compounders use aniline-based antioxidants and accelerators to extend service life in tires and industrial belts for heavy machinery.
In flame retardant formulations, aniline derivatives are incorporated into polymer matrices for wire, cable, and construction applications requiring fire performance compliance. This ensures safety across various industrial sectors.
Aniline is supplied as a clear to pale yellow liquid in bulk quantities, typically in drums, IBCs, and ISO tank containers. Technical grade is the dominant commercial specification for most buyers.
Purity levels are generally at 99% or higher for standard industrial use. Pharmaceutical-grade material is also available where aniline is required as a specified impurity reference standard for laboratory testing.
