Description

Stannous fluoride (CAS 7783-47-3), also known commercially as tin difluoride, is an inorganic tin salt used primarily as an active ingredient in oral care and pharmaceutical formulations. It delivers fluoride ion activity combined with antimicrobial action, making it a distinct functional choice compared to sodium fluoride or amine fluoride systems for manufacturers.

In toothpaste and mouth rinse formulations, it is used as both a caries-prevention agent and an antibacterial active, targeting plaque and gingivitis at concentrations typically ranging from 0.4% to 0.454%. Pharmaceutical oral care products, including prescription-strength gels and professional dental treatments, rely on it where dual fluoride and antimicrobial efficacy is required by the formulation brief.

It also appears in specialty whitening and sensitivity-relief dentifrice systems, where its stannous ion component contributes to tubule occlusion and stain-blocking performance for the end user. Some industrial surface treatment applications use this material in metal finishing processes, though oral care remains the dominant commercial demand for this specific chemical compound.

The product is supplied as a white crystalline powder. USP and pharmaceutical-grade specifications are the most commercially relevant, with purity levels typically at 98% or higher. These levels meet compendial standards, and FCC grade material is available for suppliers serving food-adjacent or oral care markets requiring food-safe certification for their products.
