Citronella oil
Description
Citronella oil (CAS 8000-29-1), FEMA 2308, is a natural essential oil steam-distilled from Cymbopogon grasses and traded in two distinct commercial types: Ceylon and Java.
It functions as a fragrance ingredient, insect repellent active, and flavoring agent across personal care, household, and food applications. In personal care, it is formulated into insect repellent sprays and lotions.
The repellent activity against mosquitoes and other insects is the primary commercial driver for candles and topical products. Household cleaning products incorporate it as a fragrance component and natural biocide.
It is frequently used in surface sprays, floor cleaners, and air fresheners. Food and beverage manufacturers use it as a flavoring agent where its status supports use in confectionery and baked goods.
It is also applied in beverages at regulated levels. Industrial applications include its use as a solvent carrier in fragrance concentrates and as a masking agent in technical cleaning formulations.
The oil is supplied as a pale yellow to yellow mobile liquid in drum and IBC quantities, with bulk container options for high-volume buyers. Java-type and Ceylon-type grades are the primary specifications.
These grades differ in geraniol and citronellal content. Food-grade and cosmetic-grade supply is standard, with certificates of analysis aligned to FCC and ISO quality benchmarks for global distribution.
