Citral
Description
Citral (CAS 5392-40-5), also marketed under the trade name Lemsyn GB, is a naturally derived aldehyde used as a primary flavoring and fragrance ingredient. It delivers an intense lemon-citrus character and serves as a key synthetic precursor for ionones and vitamin A. In food and beverage manufacturing, it is used at low concentrations to impart or reinforce lemon, lime, and verbena flavor profiles in beverages and confectionery. It carries FEMA 2303 status for use as a flavoring agent in commercial production.
Fragrance houses incorporate it into fine perfumes, functional fragrances, and household products where fresh citrus top notes are required. In personal care formulations, it contributes scent to shampoos, body washes, and skin creams. Concentration limits apply under IFRA guidelines for topical applications. It also functions as a chemical intermediate in the industrial synthesis of aroma compounds including citronellol, geraniol derivatives, and beta-ionone.
The material is supplied as a pale yellow liquid, typically in concentrations of 95% or higher for commercial fragrance and flavor use. Natural-derived and synthetic grades are both available to meet specific formulation needs. Natural citral is commonly sourced from lemongrass or Litsea cubeba oils. Food-grade material is supplied in compliance with FCC and FEMA specifications to ensure the highest safety and quality standards for global distribution.
