Calcium lignosulfonate
Description
Calcium lignosulfonate (CAS 8061-52-7), commonly abbreviated as CLS, is a natural polyelectrolyte derived from sulfite pulping of wood. It functions as a dispersant, binder, and rheology modifier across a broad range of industrial processes.
Procurement teams source it primarily for its ability to reduce water demand in formulations while improving flow and particle distribution. In concrete and cement production, CLS acts as a water-reducing admixture.
This material improves workability without increasing the water-to-cement ratio. Animal feed manufacturers use it as a pellet binder, improving pellet durability and reducing fines during handling and transport.
In agricultural formulations, it disperses and suspensions pesticides and micronutrients, improving spray coverage and soil application uniformity. Mining operations apply it as a dust suppressant and ore flotation modifier.
Water treatment processes use its flocculation properties to aggregate suspended solids for easier removal. Calcium lignosulfonate is supplied as a brown powder or as a liquid concentrate for various uses.
Dry grades are typically standardized to specific lignosulfonate content and moisture levels. Feed-grade and technical-grade designations are the most commonly traded specifications for industrial buyers.
Feed-grade material is subject to purity and contaminant limits relevant to animal nutrition compliance. Bulk quantities are available in bags, supersacks, and liquid tanker shipments depending on requirements.
