Dexpanthenol
Description
Dexpanthenol (CAS 81-13-0), also known as pantothenyl alcohol and D-pantothenol, is the biologically active alcohol analogue of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). In both pharmaceutical and personal care manufacturing, it functions as a humectant and skin-conditioning agent. This pro-vitamin converts to pantothenic acid upon absorption into the skin or hair. In topical pharmaceutical formulations, it is the active ingredient in wound-healing creams, nasal sprays, and eye drops, where it supports epithelial repair and tissue regeneration.
Cosmetic formulators incorporate it into shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in treatments to improve hair fiber moisture retention and reduce breakage. Skin care products such as lotions, serums, and barrier creams use it to deliver sustained hydration. The ingredient supports the skin's natural recovery process and is frequently used in baby care products. It also appears in post-procedure skincare lines where a well-tolerated, efficacious moisturizing active is required for sensitive skin.
Dexpanthenol is supplied as a viscous liquid, typically at 75% or 98%+ concentrations. Pharmaceutical-grade material is available to USP, BP, and Ph. Eur. specifications for high-purity manufacturing requirements. Cosmetic-grade material is also commonly offered for personal care applications. Bulk supply is standard in drums or IBCs, with smaller quantities available for development and QA purposes to meet various production scales.
