DL-panthenol
Description
DL-Panthenol (CAS 16485-10-2), also known as pantothenol, is the racemic form of the provitamin B5 alcohol used as a humectant, moisturizing agent, and film-forming conditioner across personal care, pharmaceutical, and polymer applications.
Unlike the D-isomer, the DL form is positioned primarily for topical and industrial use where biological activity of the pure enantiomer is not required. In personal care formulations, it is incorporated into shampoos and conditioners.
It is also used in skin creams and lotions to improve moisture retention and surface feel in the finished product. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it in topical preparations such as wound gels, nasal sprays, and eye drops.
In these medical applications, its humectant function supports tissue hydration. In polyurethane and polymer systems, it functions as a reactive diol, participating in cross-linking and chain extension to modify flexibility.
This chemical helps modify mechanical properties in industrial systems. Cosmetic formulators also use it in leave-on hair treatments, where it penetrates the hair shaft and reduces brittleness for better hair health.
DL-Panthenol is supplied as a clear, viscous liquid. Standard commercial grades include cosmetic/personal care grade and pharmaceutical grade, with the latter typically conforming to USP or Ph.Eur. specifications.
Bulk supply is available in drums and IBCs, with concentrations commonly at 75% or 50% aqueous solution alongside neat material. This ensures versatility for various manufacturing scales and formulation requirements.
