Beta-sitosterol
Description
Beta-sitosterol (CAS 83-46-5) is a plant-derived sterol extracted primarily from vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. It is one of the most commercially significant phytosterols, recognized across pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic supply chains.
In formulation, it functions as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and active ingredient in cholesterol-management and skin-conditioning applications. In nutraceuticals and functional foods, it is incorporated into fortified margarines and dietary supplements.
It is used in cholesterol-lowering food products, where it competes with dietary cholesterol absorption in the gut. Cosmetic formulators use it to build stable emulsions in creams and lotions for skin-care products.
Its waxy character supports lipid barrier reinforcement in topical applications. Pharmaceutical manufacturers source it as a raw material or reference standard in the production of steroid-based active ingredients.
In food-grade applications, it also serves as an antioxidant co-stabilizer in fat-based systems. This helps in extending shelf life in oils and fat blends while maintaining the integrity of the final product formulation.
The material is supplied as a white to off-white powder or crystalline solid. It is available in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, with high-purity grades typically 95%+ or 99%+ used in drug applications.
Phytosterol blends containing this compound as the primary component are also commercially available for food fortification use. These products meet rigorous industry requirements for purity and performance in global markets.
