Beta cyclodextrin
Description
Beta cyclodextrin (CAS 7585-39-9), also known as Betadex and approved as E459, is a cyclic oligosaccharide derived from starch that encapsulates guest molecules within its hydrophobic cavity.
This inclusion complex formation allows formulators to stabilize volatile, light-sensitive, or poorly soluble actives. It improves shelf life, bioavailability, and controlled release across multiple industries.
In pharmaceutical manufacturing, β-CD is used to enhance the solubility and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble APIs. This enables more consistent drug delivery in oral and topical formulations.
Food producers use it under E459 approval to protect flavors and aromas from oxidation and volatilization. This extends the effective shelf life of seasonings, encapsulated flavors, and functional food ingredients.
Personal care formulators incorporate it to stabilize fragrance compounds and active ingredients in creams, deodorants, and hair care products. This reduces degradation during storage and use.
It also functions as a chelating agent in formulations where metal ion sequestration is needed. This prevents rancidity or discoloration in sensitive chemical and cosmetic mixtures.
Beta cyclodextrin is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder. Standard grades include food-grade (E459/FCC) and pharmaceutical-grade (USP, Ph. Eur., BP).
Technical-grade is also available for industrial encapsulation applications. Bulk supply is available in multi-kilogram and metric ton quantities to support development-scale and commercial production.
