Cyclamic acid
Description
Cyclamic acid (CAS 100-88-9), also known as E952, is the free acid form of cyclamate. It is a synthetic, non-nutritive sweetener used in food and pharmaceutical formulations. It delivers intense sweetness at low concentrations and functions as both a flavoring agent and acidulant. In food and beverage manufacturing, it is used to sweeten low-calorie and sugar-free products.
Common applications include soft drinks, tabletop sweeteners, and confectionery. Pharmaceutical formulators incorporate it into oral dosage forms such as syrups, chewable tablets, and lozenges. It is ideal where controlled sweetness and mild acidity are required. Its acidulant function allows it to contribute to flavor balance and pH adjustment in finished formulations without adding caloric content.
In markets where cyclamate is approved, it is commonly blended with saccharin or other high-intensity sweeteners. This blending helps to improve the overall taste profile of the final product. The product is supplied as a white crystalline powder. Food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade material is available, with the latter typically conforming to USP, BP, or Ph. Eur. specifications.
Bulk quantities are standard for industrial buyers. Smaller packaging is also available for laboratory and formulation development use to meet specific research and testing requirements.
