Succinic acid
Description
Succinic acid (CAS 110-15-6), also known commercially as E363, is a dicarboxylic acid produced via fermentation or petrochemical synthesis and used across food, pharmaceutical, and personal care manufacturing.
It functions primarily as an acidulant, pH buffer, and flavor modifier, with secondary roles in catalysis and preservation. In food and beverage production, E363 acts as an acidulant and masking agent.
It contributes a mild, tart taste profile to dry beverage mixes, seasonings, and baked goods. Pharmaceutical formulators use it as a buffering agent in tablet and capsule production for precise pH control.
This control affects active ingredient stability and bioavailability. In personal care, it supports pH regulation in skin care formulations and acts as a catalyst precursor in certain esterification reactions.
These reactions are used to produce emollients and conditioning agents. It also functions as a mild preservative and fermentation intermediate in specialty chemical synthesis for various industrial uses.
Succinic acid is supplied as a white crystalline powder in both food-grade and technical-grade specifications. Food and pharmaceutical applications are typically served by FCC, USP, and Ph. Eur. compliant grades.
Standard packaging ranges from 25 kg bags to bulk quantities. Bio-based variants are increasingly available to meet sustainability sourcing requirements and environmental standards for modern manufacturing.
