Polymethyl acrylate
Description
Polymethyl acrylate (CAS 9003-21-8) is an acrylic homopolymer produced by the free-radical polymerization of methyl acrylate monomer. It functions as a film-forming binder, rheology modifier, and plasticizing component.
This versatile polymer is used across coatings, adhesives, and textile finishing systems. In pressure-sensitive adhesives and sealants, it contributes flexibility and tack while supporting crosslinking with appropriate curing agents.
Coatings formulators incorporate it as a binder or co-binder where a soft, extensible film is required. This is particularly useful in leather finishing and paper coatings that demand crack resistance under flexing.
Textile manufacturers apply it in fabric treatment formulations to impart softness and improve fiber cohesion without stiffening the hand. It ensures durability and flexibility in various industrial textile applications.
In printing and packaging, it functions as a component in water-based ink systems and lamination adhesives. These applications rely on the polymer for controlled rheology and critical substrate adhesion properties.
Polymethyl acrylate is supplied as aqueous emulsion or latex dispersion, with solid polymer forms available for specialized compounding. Molecular weight grades vary to suit end-use viscosity and film-formation requirements.
Technical grade is the standard commercial specification for most industrial uses. Food-contact or regulated-use grades should be confirmed against applicable regional compliance documentation before implementation.
