Description

N-Methylolacrylamide (CAS 924-42-5), commonly abbreviated as NMA, is a reactive acrylamide monomer used to introduce crosslinking functionality into polymer systems. It enables covalent bonding between polymer chains or between polymers and substrates. This chemical improves durability and wash resistance in finished products across various industries. In textile finishing, NMA is incorporated into binder systems and crease-resist treatments where it crosslinks with cellulosic fibers.

This process delivers dimensional stability and wrinkle recovery to fabrics. Paper and nonwoven manufacturers use it to improve wet strength by anchoring polymer networks within the fiber matrix during the production process. In emulsion polymerization, NMA acts as a reactive comonomer that builds in latent crosslink sites. These sites are activated during film formation or heat curing, which is a critical performance factor for pressure-sensitive adhesives.

The monomer is also essential for high-performance coatings and leather finishing formulations. These applications rely on NMA-modified binders to improve the adhesion and abrasion resistance of topcoats on various leather goods. N-Methylolacrylamide is supplied as an aqueous solution, with 48% and 60% concentrations being the most commercially standard. Technical grade is the predominant specification across these diverse industrial applications.

Packaging typically ranges from drums to IBC totes, with bulk options available for high-volume polymer and textile chemical producers. Proper storage and handling are required to maintain the stability of the aqueous solution.
