Description

Tert-butyl peroxypivalate, commonly abbreviated as TBPP, is an organic peroxide initiator used to trigger free-radical polymerization and crosslinking reactions in polymer manufacturing. Its relatively low decomposition temperature makes it the preferred choice where controlled, low-temperature initiation is a commercial requirement for CAS 927-07-1.

In PVC suspension and emulsion polymerization, TBPP initiates chain reactions at temperatures typically between 40–60°C, giving processors tight control over molecular weight distribution. Acrylic and vinyl acetate polymer producers use it to achieve consistent conversion rates in batch and continuous reactor systems. It is a vital component for high-performance resins.

In the rubber and elastomer sector, it functions as a crosslinking agent to build network structure in EPDM and similar compounds, directly influencing final product hardness. Specialty coatings and adhesive formulators also rely on TBPP to initiate cure in systems where higher-temperature peroxides would degrade sensitive co-monomers during the process.

Tert-butyl peroxypivalate is supplied as a solution, typically in concentrations around 75% in aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents, due to the handling requirements of organic peroxides. Technical-grade material is the standard commercial offering, with specifications aligned to active oxygen content. It is transported under temperature-controlled conditions.
