Bismuth subgallate
Description
Bismuth subgallate (CAS 99-26-3) is an inorganic-organic bismuth salt used primarily as an active pharmaceutical ingredient and excipient in medicinal preparations. It functions as an astringent and intestinal adsorbent.
This compound is a recognized active in gastrointestinal and wound-care formulations. In oral pharmaceutical products, it is formulated into tablets and suppositories targeting gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea and flatulence.
Topical wound dressings and surgical packing materials incorporate it for its astringent action on mucosal and skin tissue. It is also used in rectal preparations, including hemorrhoid treatments, where controlled delivery is required.
Compounding pharmacies source it as a raw material for custom-dose formulations when standard commercial products do not meet patient-specific requirements. It is supplied as a fine yellow powder for industrial use.
The material is available in pharmaceutical-grade specifications conforming to USP, BP, and Ph. Eur. monographs. These are the standard references for buyers qualifying it as an API or excipient.
Bulk quantities are typically offered in moisture-controlled packaging given the compound's sensitivity to light and humidity. Proper storage and transport are essential to maintain the chemical integrity of the product.
