Bismuth subsalicylate
Description
Bismuth subsalicylate (CAS 14882-18-9), also known as pink bismuth and commonly abbreviated as BSS, is an inorganic bismuth salt used across pharmaceutical and personal care manufacturing.
It functions primarily as an antimicrobial and preservative agent, with established use in gastrointestinal formulations and topical applications. BSS is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in over-the-counter remedies.
It is formulated into oral suspensions and chewable tablets at defined dosage strengths. In personal care, it is incorporated into cosmetic formulations such as lip products and skin preparations for its properties.
Its antimicrobial and mild astringent properties make it a versatile additive. Pharmaceutical manufacturers also use it as an intermediate in the production of other bismuth-based compounds for various uses.
Its biocidal activity supports preservation in topical creams and ointments where alternative preservatives face regulatory restrictions. Bismuth subsalicylate is supplied as a fine white to off-white powder.
It is available in USP and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, meeting purity requirements for use in regulated drug products. Technical-grade material is also offered for industrial applications.
