Dodecyl gallate
Description
Dodecyl gallate (CAS 1166-52-5), also sold as lauryl gallate and approved as E312, is a lipophilic antioxidant used to protect fats and oils. Its fat-soluble character makes it effective in applications where water-soluble antioxidants cannot perform, protecting oil-based formulations from oxidative degradation.
In food manufacturing, E312 is used to stabilize edible oils, fats, and fat-containing products such as margarines, shortenings, and fried snack coatings, extending shelf life. Personal care formulators incorporate it into lipstick bases, creams, and oil-rich emollients where oxidative stability directly affects product shelf life and sensory quality.
In plastics and polymer processing, it functions as a stabilizer against UV-induced and thermal oxidative degradation, protecting polyolefins and similar materials during compounding. It also finds use in industrial lubricants and technical oils requiring long-term antioxidant protection. Dodecyl gallate is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder.
Standard grades include food-grade material meeting FCC and E312 purity specifications, as well as technical-grade material for polymer and industrial applications. Packaging typically ranges from kilogram quantities up to bulk sacks for industrial procurement, ensuring reliable supply for various manufacturing requirements.
