Dilauryl thiodipropionate
Description
Dilauryl thiodipropionate (CAS 123-28-4), commonly abbreviated as DLTDP and approved as food additive E389, is a thioester-based antioxidant used to prevent oxidative degradation.
It functions as a secondary antioxidant, decomposing hydroperoxides before they trigger chain-reaction oxidation in polymers, fats, and lubricant systems. This mechanism ensures long-term stability.
In plastics and polymer processing, DLTDP is combined with primary antioxidants such as hindered phenols to extend the service life of polyolefins, PVC, and rubber compounds exposed to heat.
Food manufacturers use it under regulatory approval to stabilize fats and oils against rancidity, particularly in edible fat blends and various processed food products across the industry.
In personal care formulations, it protects lipid-rich bases including creams, ointments, and hair oils from oxidative breakdown during shelf storage, maintaining product integrity over time.
Industrial lubricant formulators incorporate it to slow oxidative thickening and acid buildup in base oils under high-temperature operating conditions, ensuring mechanical efficiency and safety.
DLTDP is supplied as a white to off-white waxy solid, typically in flake or powder form. It is available in food-grade specification as well as technical grade for industrial applications.
Standard packaging includes fiber drums and bags, with bulk quantities available for industrial procurement. The material is handled according to strict safety and quality protocols.
