Copper naphthenate

Copper naphthenate (CAS 1338-02-9), also sold under the abbreviation CNC and commercially known as naphthenic acids copper salts, is an oil-soluble copper compound.

Where is Copper naphthenate used?

• Wood preservation and agricultural treatments: protects timber, utility poles, and structural materials
• Coatings and marine antifouling: biocidal additive that remains active in oil-based systems
• Rubber and elastomer manufacturing: cross-linking catalyst and adhesion promoter for bonding rubber to metal or textile substrates
• Lubricant and metalworking fluids: boundary lubrication additive and corrosion inhibitor for specific metal surfaces
• It delivers broad-spectrum biocidal activity and functions as a metal catalyst in curing and cross-linking systems.

Good to know: The compound prevents fungal decay and insect attack without requiring pressure treatment in all cases. It is used where water-soluble alternatives are unsuitable.
