Nickel naphthenate

CAS

Description

Nickel naphthenate (CAS 61788-71-4), also sold as naphthenic acid nickel salt, is an organometallic compound derived from naphthenic acids used primarily as a catalyst and metal drier in industrial formulations.

It delivers controlled nickel metal content in oil-soluble form, making it practical for coatings, polymer processing, and fuel additive applications. In coatings and alkyd systems, it functions as a drier catalyst.

This material accelerates oxidative crosslinking to improve cure speed and film hardness. Rubber and elastomer compounders use it as an adhesion promoter between steel cord and rubber in tire manufacturing.

In the oil and gas sector, it serves as a corrosion inhibitor additive and lubricant component in drilling and metalworking fluids. Polymer producers also apply it as a catalyst precursor in specific processes.

It is frequently utilized in Ziegler-Natta and hydrogenation processes where a soluble nickel source is required. Nickel naphthenate is supplied as a viscous liquid solution, typically in mineral spirits or naphtha carriers.

The nickel metal content commonly ranges from 6% to 12% by weight. Technical grade is the standard commercial specification for industrial and catalytic applications across various global markets.

Concentration and solvent base can vary by supplier to meet specific formulation or handling requirements. This ensures the product remains stable and effective for its intended industrial use cases.
