Potassium tripolyphosphate
Description
Potassium tripolyphosphate (CAS 13845-36-8), also known as KTPP or E451ii, is an inorganic polyphosphate salt used across food processing, water treatment, and industrial applications.
It functions primarily as a sequestrant, buffering agent, and dispersant. It binds metal ions and stabilizes formulations where sodium-based alternatives are unsuitable or restricted in specific chemical processes.
In food processing, KTPP is approved for use in meat and seafood products. It improves water retention and texture in processed and cured preparations, ensuring high-quality results for commercial food manufacturers.
Water treatment operations rely on it to sequester calcium and magnesium ions. This prevents scale formation in boilers, cooling towers, and distribution pipelines, maintaining the efficiency of industrial water systems.
In textile and paper manufacturing, it disperses pigments and controls hardness ions during dyeing and pulp processing. This improves process consistency and ensures uniform color application in large-scale production.
Leather processing operations use it as a buffering and softening agent during hide preparation stages. It helps manage the chemical environment to ensure the durability and quality of the final leather goods.
Potassium tripolyphosphate is supplied as a white powder or granule. Food-grade material is available to the required specification, suitable for use in regulated food and beverage applications globally.
Technical grade is also available for industrial water treatment and manufacturing end uses. This grade provides a cost-effective solution for non-food applications requiring high-performance sequestration and buffering.
