Menthol

Menthol (CAS 1490-04-6), also identified by FEMA 2665, is a naturally derived or synthetically produced cyclic alcohol extracted primarily from peppermint and cornmint oils.

Where is Menthol used?

• Oral care and confectionery: cooling and flavor profile in toothpastes and mouthwashes
• Chewing gums and mint-flavored candies
• Pharmaceuticals: functional cooling agent in topical analgesics, throat lozenges, nasal decongestants and cough suppressants
• Personal care: shaving products, lip balms and skin cooling gels
• Tobacco and e-liquid blending: modifies harshness and delivers a distinctive flavor character
• It delivers a characteristic cooling sensation without a temperature change.

Good to know: Natural l-menthol often commands a premium over racemic synthetic material. Grades include USP, BP, Ph. Eur. and food-grade specifications.
