Description

L-menthol (CAS 2216-51-5), also known as peppermint camphor, is the naturally occurring enantiomer of menthol derived primarily from peppermint oil or produced synthetically. It delivers the characteristic cooling sensation and mint flavor that define its commercial value across pharmaceuticals, food, and personal care manufacturing sectors worldwide.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it is used in topical analgesics, cough suppressants, and throat lozenges where its cooling effect is the active functional attribute for the patient. Food and beverage producers incorporate it as a flavoring agent in confectionery, chewing gum, and oral care products requiring authentic peppermint character and sensory impact.

Personal care formulators use it in toothpastes, shaving gels, and cooling skincare products where performance drives consumer preference. Tobacco manufacturers also source it as a primary component. This material is supplied as white crystalline flakes, crystals, or fused solid form. Standard grades include USP, BP, Ph. Eur., and food-grade specifications aligned with FCC requirements.

Both natural and synthetic grades are commercially available, with natural origin material commanding a premium in markets where botanical sourcing is a specific requirement for the final product.
