D-camphor

D-Camphor (CAS 464-49-3), also sold as natural camphor, is the naturally derived enantiomer of camphor obtained primarily from the wood of Cinnamomum camphora. Distinct from synthetic racemic camphor, it is the preferred form for flavor and fragrance applications. In food and beverage, D-camphor is used at controlled levels as a flavoring agent under FEMA 2230, contributing a characteristic cool, minty, and slightly medicinal note to confectionery and certain liqueurs.

Personal care formulators incorporate it into oral care products, such as toothpastes and mouthwashes, where its distinctive flavor profile supports cooling and freshness positioning in the consumer market. In fine fragrance and cosmetic formulations, it functions as a functional fragrance component, adding sharp, camphorous top notes to balms, creams, and various topical preparations for skin care.

Camphor oil, the steam-distilled form, serves as a commercially traded intermediate for fragrance compounding and is often sourced alongside the crystalline material to meet diverse manufacturing needs. D-Camphor is supplied as white crystalline powder or compressed tablets and blocks. Food-grade and FCC-compliant material is standard for flavor applications, while cosmetic-grade product is available for personal care use.
