Sodium stearyl fumarate
Description
Sodium stearyl fumarate (CAS 4070-80-8), commonly abbreviated as SSF, is a pharmaceutical-grade lubricant and flow aid used primarily in solid dosage manufacturing. Sodium monostearyl fumarate and sodium octadecyl fumarate are recognized alternative names encountered in supplier and regulatory documentation.
It functions as a tablet and capsule lubricant, reducing die-wall friction during compression and improving powder flow in high-speed tableting operations. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, SSF is the preferred lubricant for direct compression and roller compaction processes.
This material is particularly useful where magnesium stearate sensitivity or compatibility issues arise with active ingredients. Food manufacturers use it as a dough conditioner and anti-sticking agent in starch-based and extruded products.
In personal care formulations, it acts as a binder and texture modifier in pressed powders and solid cosmetic sticks. Polymer processors incorporate it as a processing aid and internal lubricant to improve melt flow and surface finish in thermoplastic compounds.
Sodium stearyl fumarate is supplied as a fine white powder. It is available in NF and Ph. Eur. grades for pharmaceutical applications, with food-grade material meeting FCC specifications for food and nutraceutical use.
Technical-grade material is also offered for polymer and industrial applications. This versatile compound ensures consistent performance across diverse manufacturing environments, from high-speed tablet presses to industrial polymer extrusion lines.
