Sodium starch glycolate
Description
Sodium starch glycolate (CAS 9063-38-1), commonly abbreviated as SSG, is a cross-linked, carboxymethylated starch derivative used primarily as a superdisintegrant in solid dosage pharmaceutical manufacturing.
It rapidly absorbs water and swells, breaking apart compressed tablets and capsule fills within minutes of contact with aqueous media. In pharmaceutical tablet production, SSG is incorporated into direct compression formulations.
It is also used in wet granulation formulations to ensure rapid disintegration of oral solid dosage forms across a broad range of APIs. Type A, Type B, and Type C grades allow formulators to select sodium levels.
These grades are matched to specific API sensitivities and regulatory requirements. In topical and cosmetic formulations, SSG functions as a thickener and texture modifier in gels, creams, and cleansing products.
It is utilized where controlled viscosity is required. It also appears in specialty food applications as a carrier and stabilizer in dry blended systems. Sodium starch glycolate is supplied as a white powder.
Pharmaceutical grades are available to USP, Ph. Eur., and BP specifications. Type A (low sodium, low substitution) is the most commonly sourced grade for regulated drug products.
Technical and cosmetic grades are also available for non-pharma applications. This versatile excipient ensures consistent performance and stability across various industrial and medical applications.
