Butylene carbonate
Description
Butylene carbonate (CAS 4437-85-8), also known as 1,2-butylene carbonate, is a high-boiling cyclic carbonate solvent used across electronics manufacturing, polymer processing, and industrial cleaning. Its low volatility and strong solvating power make it a practical alternative to conventional solvents where reduced evaporation losses are a formulation priority for industrial manufacturers.
In lithium-ion battery electrolytes, this compound functions as a co-solvent to improve low-temperature performance and ionic conductivity. Polymer and resin formulators use it as a reactive diluent. It is particularly effective where compatibility with polycarbonate or polyurethane systems is required. Industrial and institutional cleaning formulations incorporate it as a slow-evaporating carrier solvent.
This chemical is ideal for heavy-duty degreasing of metal surfaces and electronic components. In lubricant and metalworking fluid development, it supports additive solvation and acts as a base fluid. The product is supplied as a clear liquid in drum and IBC quantities, with bulk availability for larger industrial volumes. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering for most uses.
High-purity grades are available for battery electrolyte and electronics applications where moisture and impurity thresholds are tightly controlled to meet specific performance requirements.
