1-methylimidazole
Description
1-Methylimidazole (CAS 616-47-7), commonly abbreviated as NMI, is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound used industrially as a catalyst, curing agent, and synthesis intermediate. Its reactivity toward electrophiles and metal coordination makes it a practical building block across pharmaceutical manufacturing, polymer chemistry, and specialty coatings.
In epoxy resin systems, NMI functions as a latent curing agent and cure accelerator, enabling controlled crosslinking in electrical laminates, adhesives, and industrial coatings. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a coupling catalyst in peptide synthesis and acylation reactions, where it improves reaction efficiency and yield at scale.
NMI is a key precursor in the synthesis of ionic liquids, particularly imidazolium-based salts used as reaction media or electrolytes in battery and electrochemical applications. It also serves as a ligand or co-catalyst in organometallic processes, supporting active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production and fine chemical synthesis.
1-Methylimidazole is supplied as a colorless to pale yellow liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk quantities. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering for most uses. High-purity grades are available for pharmaceutical and electronic applications. Buyers should confirm water content and color specifications when sourcing for sensitive catalytic applications.
