Description

2-Methylimidazole (CAS 693-98-1), commonly abbreviated as 2-MZ, is a heterocyclic amine used as a curing agent and catalyst in epoxy resin systems. It accelerates crosslinking reactions at elevated temperatures.

This chemical enables manufacturers to achieve controlled cure profiles across a range of thermoset formulations. In electronics manufacturing, 2-MZ is a standard curing agent for epoxy-based printed circuit board laminates.

It is also utilized in underfill compounds and encapsulants where precise Tg control is critical. Powder coating formulators use it to catalyze epoxy-polyester hybrid systems, adjusting cure speed and flow characteristics.

These applications are common for industrial and architectural finishes. Structural adhesive producers incorporate it into one-component epoxy systems that require latent reactivity for long-term stability.

The material remains stable at room temperature but activates rapidly under heat. It also functions as a pH buffer and intermediate in the synthesis of specialty imidazole derivatives used in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The product is further utilized in agrochemical manufacturing processes. 2-Methylimidazole is supplied as an off-white to pale yellow crystalline powder for various industrial and laboratory requirements.

Technical grade is the standard commercial form, with high-purity grades available for electronics and specialty chemical applications. It is typically offered in kilogram-scale bags through to bulk quantities.
