1,6-hexanediol
Description
1,6-Hexanediol (CAS 629-11-8), also known as hexamethylene glycol and commercially abbreviated as HDO, is a difunctional diol used as a monomer and reactive building block across polymer chemistry.
Its two terminal hydroxyl groups make it a controlled chain extender and cross-linker in the production of polyurethanes, polyesters, and specialty resins. In coatings, HDO is used to synthesize polyester and polyurethane polyols.
These polyols deliver flexibility and durability in automotive and industrial topcoats. Adhesive and sealant formulators incorporate it as a chain extender in two-component polyurethane systems, where it controls hardness and open time.
Polycarbonate diol production for high-performance elastomers and thermoplastic polyurethanes represents another significant outlet. In personal care, it functions as a coupling agent and humectant in various formulations.
It is commonly used in skin creams and hair conditioners, where it also contributes antimicrobial stabilization. 1,6-Hexanediol is supplied as white crystalline flakes or pastilles, with molten liquid available for bulk shipment.
Standard commercial grades include technical and polymer-grade specifications, with purity levels typically at 99% or higher. Pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP or Ph.Eur. standards is available for regulated applications.
