Vitamin D3 Cholecalciferol

Cholecalciferol (CAS 67-97-0), also known as Vitamin D3, is the animal-derived form of vitamin D.

Where is Vitamin D3 Cholecalciferol used?

• Food and beverage: fortification of dairy products, plant-based milks, cereals and infant formula
• Premixes and supplements: softgels, tablets and powdered blends
• Animal feed: skeletal development and egg production in poultry, swine and aquaculture
• Pharmaceuticals: active in prescription and OTC vitamin D3 drops and oral solutions for deficiency treatment
• It supports calcium and phosphorus metabolism regulation for bone health.
• In the skin, regulates keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation, maintaining skin barrier and having anti-psoriatic effects.

Formulation notes

• Rifampicin may reduce the efficacy of cholecalciferol due to induction of hepatic enzymes.
• Isoniazid may reduce the efficacy of cholecalciferol due to inhibition of the metabolic activation of cholecalciferol.

Typical specification

• Vitamin D3 100,000 IU/g powder is standardized at 100,000 IU/g, obtained through microencapsulation from cholecalciferol oil of algal origin from lichen (Cladonia rangiferina L.).
• Available in both oil and powder forms, both of food grade, depending on formulation needs.

Regulatory status

• Classified as vitamin D and analogues with ATC code A11CC05.
• 5 µg per day of vitamin D3 corresponds to 100% of the nutrient reference value under EU Regulation 1169/2011.
• The maximum permitted intake of vitamin D3 is 50 µg per day.
