Choline Chloride

Choline chloride (CAS 67-48-1), also sold under the names Lipotril and Paresan, is a quaternary ammonium salt classified as a B-complex vitamin essential to animal metabolism.

Where is Choline Chloride used?

• Animal feed: primary dietary choline source for poultry, swine and aquaculture, where deficiency affects liver function and growth
• Used primarily in poultry feed, and also in pet food and aquaculture feed.
• Addition is generally made as the last step in all types of feed, in addition to preventing moisture melting.
• Food and beverage: nutrient fortifier in functional foods, infant formula and dietary supplements
• Pharmaceutical: active ingredient in lipotropic preparations and buffering agent in liquid dosage forms
• Personal care: moisturizing products, where its hygroscopic character supports water retention
• It functions as a nutrient supplement, humectant and processing aid in feed, food and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Good to know: Approved as food additive E1001(iii). The material is highly hygroscopic and must be stored in a cool, dry environment to prevent clumping.

Formulation notes

• Forms a deep eutectic with urea, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and many other compounds.
• Has a rapid degradation effect on other vitamins, especially vitamins A, D, K in the presence of metal elements, so multi-dimensional formulations should not contain choline.

• Powder is obtained by spraying and mixing aqueous choline chloride onto a cereal carrier, which is then dried.
• Available in liquid, powder, and granular forms.
• A 75% by weight aqueous solution of choline chloride is available on the market.
• Assay (dry basis) is 98.0–100.5%.

Regulatory status

• Registered under the REACH Regulation and manufactured and/or imported in the European Economic Area at ≥ 1,000 tonnes per year.
• Regulated as a food additive and GRAS substance under 21 CFR Part 182.8252 in the US.
