Tea Tree Oil
Description
Tea Tree Oil (CAS 68647-73-4), also known by its abbreviation TTO and commercially as Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil, is a steam-distilled botanical extract sourced from the leaves of the Australian tea tree.
It functions as a natural antimicrobial and preservative active across personal care, pharmaceutical, and cleaning product formulations. In cosmetics and personal care, TTO is incorporated into acne treatments and shampoos.
Its antimicrobial activity targets scalp conditions and skin blemishes. Pharmaceutical and OTC topical formulations use it as an active ingredient in antifungal creams, nail treatments, and wound-care preparations.
Home care and industrial cleaning products, including surface sprays, disinfectants, and laundry additives, rely on TTO as a biocidal agent with added fragrance benefit. It also appears in oral care products.
Mouthwashes and toothpastes utilize the oil where preservation and flavoring functions overlap under FEMA 3902. Tea Tree Oil is supplied as a clear to pale yellow mobile liquid for industrial use.
Standard grades include cosmetic-grade and pharmaceutical-grade material, with quality benchmarked against ISO 4730. This defines terpinen-4-ol content and composition thresholds relevant to buyer specification.
Bulk supply is available in drums and IBCs, with smaller packaging options for laboratory and formulation use. This ensures versatility for manufacturers across various sectors requiring high-purity botanical extracts.
