Description

Sodium hypophosphite (CAS 7681-53-0), commercially abbreviated as SHP and also known as sodium phosphinate, is an inorganic phosphorus salt used industrially as a reducing agent and catalyst.

It is essential in electroless metal plating and polymer stabilization. Its reducing capacity drives controlled chemical reactions across multiple manufacturing sectors, ensuring high-performance results in industrial settings.

In electroless nickel plating, SHP acts as the primary reducing agent, enabling uniform metal deposition on complex or non-conductive substrates without an external electrical current. This is a critical process in electronics.

Automotive and aerospace component manufacturing also rely on this technology. Polymer producers use SHP as a catalyst and stabilizer in the production of polyamides, where it controls molecular weight and prevents discoloration.

In water treatment, it functions as a sequestrant to inhibit scale formation and metal ion interference in industrial cooling and boiler systems. This helps maintain the efficiency and longevity of heavy machinery.

Pharmaceutical and food-grade applications include its use as an antioxidant and preservative in formulations where phosphorus-based reduction chemistry is required. It ensures stability and safety in sensitive products.

Sodium hypophosphite is supplied as a white crystalline powder or as an aqueous solution, typically at 50% concentration. Recognized grades include technical, food-grade meeting FCC specifications, and pharmaceutical-grade.

These pharmaceutical grades often meet USP or BP standards. Bulk quantities are available in bags or drums, with solution grades commonly shipped in IBC containers for industrial logistics.
