Epoxidized soybean oil

Epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO, CAS 8013-07-8) is a bio-based plasticizer and thermal stabilizer derived from refined soybean oil. Also designated E470 in food contact applications.

Where is Epoxidized soybean oil used?

• PVC formulations: secondary plasticizer and co-stabilizer that scavenges hydrogen chloride released during heat processing
• PVC compounding: improves long-term thermal stability in films, tubing, flooring and cable insulation
• Food contact PVC such as cling films and jar lid gaskets: compliant plasticizer-stabilizer under EU food contact legislation
• Lubricants: base component or additive in metalworking and biodegradable blends, epoxy functionality improves oxidative stability
• It also serves as a reactive diluent and stabilizer in certain epoxy resin systems and coatings.
