Epoxidized soybean oil
Description
Epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO, CAS 8013-07-8), also designated E470 in food contact applications, is a bio-based plasticizer and thermal stabilizer derived from refined soybean oil.
It functions primarily as a secondary plasticizer and co-stabilizer in PVC formulations, extending flexibility while scavenging hydrogen chloride released during heat processing.
In PVC compounding, ESBO is used alongside primary plasticizers such as phthalates or citrates to improve long-term thermal stability in films, tubing, flooring, and cable insulation.
Food contact PVC, including cling films and gaskets for jar lids, relies on ESBO as a compliant plasticizer-stabilizer where regulatory approval under EU food contact legislation is required.
Lubricant formulators incorporate it as a base component or additive in metalworking and biodegradable lubricant blends, where its epoxy functionality improves oxidative stability.
It also serves as a reactive diluent and stabilizer in certain epoxy resin systems and coatings. ESBO is supplied as a clear to light yellow viscous liquid for industrial use.
Standard commercial grades include technical grade for industrial PVC and lubricant use, and food-contact grade meeting EU Regulation 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR specifications.
Drum and IBC packaging are the standard supply formats for bulk procurement. This material ensures high performance and compliance across various demanding industrial applications.
