Brominated vegetable oil
Description
Brominated vegetable oil (CAS 8016-94-2), also known as E443, is a food-grade additive produced by reacting vegetable oil with bromine to increase its density. It functions as a weighing agent and emulsifier in flavored beverage formulations.
This additive keeps citrus and other flavor oils evenly suspended throughout the drink rather than separating to the surface. Its primary commercial use is in citrus-flavored soft drinks and sports beverages where it prevents flavor oil separation.
It maintains a consistent, cloudy appearance throughout the product shelf life. Fruit-flavored fountain drinks and ready-to-drink beverages rely on it to stabilize emulsified flavor concentrates during distribution and storage.
It also appears in flavored malt beverages and energy drinks where oil-based flavor systems require a density-matched carrier to remain uniformly dispersed. Formulators use it to fine-tune the specific gravity of the oil phase.
This ensures the oil phase matches the aqueous base in high-oil-load flavor emulsions. Brominated vegetable oil is supplied as a viscous liquid, typically amber to orange in color, for industrial beverage applications.
It is available in food-grade quality conforming to specifications such as FCC. Furthermore, FEMA 2168 recognition supports its use in flavored food and beverage applications across various global markets.
Standard packaging includes drums and intermediate bulk containers suited to beverage manufacturing volumes. This ensures the product remains stable and easy to handle during the large-scale production of commercial soft drinks.
