Description

Butylated Hydroxyanisole (CAS 121-00-6), commonly known as BHA or E320, is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant used across food, cosmetic, and industrial manufacturing. It prevents oxidative degradation in fats, oils, and lipid-containing formulations.

This versatile additive is essential for extending shelf life and maintaining product quality. In food manufacturing, BHA is added to edible fats, oils, snack foods, and packaging materials to inhibit rancidity and meet regulatory requirements.

Cosmetic and personal care formulators incorporate it into creams, lotions, and lip products to protect oil-phase ingredients from oxidative breakdown. This ensures that consumer products remain stable and effective over time.

Industrial lubricant producers use BHA to stabilize mineral oils and metalworking fluids against oxidation under high-temperature processing conditions. It is a critical component for maintaining the integrity of industrial fluids.

In plastics and polymer compounding, it functions as a processing stabilizer, protecting base resins during extrusion and molding. This prevents the degradation of materials during intense manufacturing cycles.

BHA is supplied as a white to off-white waxy solid, typically in flake or powder form. It is available in food-grade specifications conforming to FCC, BP, and Ph. Eur. standards for global compliance.

Technical grade options are also available for industrial applications where high-purity food standards are not required. Purity levels of 98.5% and above are standard for food and cosmetic grades to ensure safety.
