2-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole
Description
2-tert-Butyl-4-hydroxyanisole (CAS 88-32-4), one of the two isomers that together constitute commercial BHA, functions as a synthetic antioxidant and preservative across food, cosmetic, and industrial formulations. It inhibits oxidative degradation in fats, oils, and polymer systems, extending shelf life and protecting product integrity. In food manufacturing, it is incorporated into edible fats, oils, and fat-containing products.
This additive helps to retard rancidity and meet regulatory antioxidant requirements. Cosmetic and personal care formulators use it to stabilize lipid-based products such as creams, lotions, and lip products. Oxidative spoilage often shortens the usable life of these goods. In plastics and polymer processing, it acts as a processing stabilizer, protecting materials from thermal oxidation during compounding and extrusion.
Lubricant and metalworking fluid manufacturers add it to mineral oil-based formulations to suppress oxidative breakdown. This is particularly effective under high-temperature operating conditions found in industrial settings. The material is supplied as a white to off-white waxy solid or flakes. Standard grades include food-grade material meeting FCC and BP/Ph.Eur. specifications for regulated applications.
These certifications support use in high-compliance food and cosmetic sectors. Technical-grade material is also available for industrial polymer and lubricant applications where food-compliance is not required.
