Description

Butylated Hydroxyanisole (CAS 25013-16-5), commonly known as BHA or E320, is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant used across food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. It prevents oxidative degradation in fats, oils, and lipid-containing formulations, extending shelf life and maintaining product integrity. In food manufacturing, BHA is approved under E320 and FEMA 2183.

It is used in edible fats, oils, snack foods, and packaging materials where fat oxidation is a primary spoilage concern. Cosmetic and personal care formulators incorporate it into creams and lotions. These products stabilize oil-phase ingredients against rancidity. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it to protect lipid excipients and active ingredients in oral and topical dosage forms to ensure stability.

In plastics, rubber, and lubricant production, BHA functions as a processing stabilizer. It protects polymer matrices and petroleum-based fluids from oxidative breakdown during manufacturing and storage. BHA is supplied as a white to off-white waxy solid, typically in flake or powder form. It is available in food-grade specifications conforming to FCC, BP, and Ph. Eur. standards.

Technical grade options are also available for industrial applications. Purity levels of 98.5% and above are standard for regulated food and pharmaceutical supply chains to ensure high performance.
