Description

Sodium tert-butoxide (CAS 865-48-5), commonly abbreviated as NaOtBu and also known as sodium tert-butylate, is a strong, non-nucleophilic base used across pharmaceutical synthesis.

It is widely utilized in agrochemical manufacturing and polymer chemistry. Its combination of high basicity and steric bulk makes it the reagent of choice for reactions where competing nucleophilic attack must be suppressed.

In pharmaceutical API synthesis, NaOtBu drives deprotonation, condensation, and cyclization steps where milder bases fail to achieve adequate conversion. Agrochemical producers rely on it as a catalyst or base.

It is essential in the synthesis of herbicide and pesticide active ingredients. In polymer and specialty materials manufacturing, it initiates anionic polymerization and facilitates the production of functional monomers.

Biotechnology and fine chemical workflows use it to generate reactive intermediates under controlled anhydrous conditions. In these settings, reaction selectivity directly impacts the final yield and purity.

Sodium tert-butoxide is supplied as a white to off-white free-flowing powder and as solutions in THF or toluene at concentrations typically ranging from 1 M to 2 M for industrial use.

Technical and synthesis grades are the standard commercial offerings, with high-purity grades available to meet pharmaceutical manufacturing requirements. Packaging ranges from laboratory-scale quantities to bulk drums.

Moisture-sensitive handling requirements are factored into standard supply formats to ensure stability. This ensures the product maintains its chemical integrity during transport and storage for various applications.
