Sodium methoxide
Description
Sodium methoxide (CAS 124-41-4), also sold as sodium methylate and abbreviated NaOMe, is a strong alkoxide base used industrially as a catalyst and chemical intermediate. Its reactivity with esters, fats, and acidic compounds drives transesterification, condensation, and neutralization processes across multiple manufacturing sectors.
In biodiesel production, NaOMe catalyzes the transesterification of vegetable oils and animal fats, converting triglycerides into fatty acid methyl esters at commercial scale. Pharmaceutical manufacturers rely on it to drive condensation and cyclization reactions in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Controlled basicity is critical to yield and purity in these chemical processes. In polymer processing, it initiates anionic polymerization and acts as a catalyst precursor for producing specialty plastics and resins. These applications require high-purity reagents to ensure consistent results.
Food-grade sodium methylate is also used in edible oil refining to remove free fatty acids and adjust the composition of fats and shortenings. This process is essential for the production of high-quality food products and industrial ingredients used globally.
Sodium methoxide is supplied as a liquid solution, most commonly at 25% and 30% in methanol, and as a dry powder or granules for applications requiring solvent-free handling. This versatility allows manufacturers to choose the best form for their specific operational needs.
Standard grades include technical, food-grade, and pharmaceutical-grade material to meet the purity requirements of each sector. Solution concentrations and moisture specifications vary by grade, with pharmaceutical supply typically held to tighter limits for safety and efficacy.
