Description

1-Naphthol (CAS 90-15-3), also sold under the dye intermediate designations Zoba ERN, Ursol ERN, and Tertral ERN, is a hydroxylated naphthalene compound used primarily as a chemical intermediate. It is used in the synthesis of dyes, pigments, and active pharmaceutical ingredients. Its reactivity toward coupling and oxidative reactions makes it a reliable building block across colorant manufacturing and specialty chemical production.

In textile and leather dyeing, it functions as a coupling component in the production of azo dyes. It reacts with diazonium salts to generate deep, fast colors on fiber substrates for various industrial applications. Pigment manufacturers use it as a key intermediate for producing naphthol-based pigments found in printing inks and packaging coatings. In pharmaceutical synthesis, it serves as a precursor to active ingredients.

It is also utilized as an antioxidant stabilizer used in drug formulations. Personal care formulators source it for oxidative hair dye systems, where controlled coupling reactions produce specific target shades. The product is supplied as a white to pale yellow crystalline solid or flake. Technical grade is the standard commercial form, with purity typically at 98% or higher for most industrial manufacturing processes.

Pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP or BP specifications is available for regulated synthesis applications. This ensures high quality and compliance for sensitive chemical and medical production needs.
