3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid
Description
3-Hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (CAS 92-70-6), commonly known as BON acid or BONA, is a naphthalene-derived organic acid used primarily as a coupling component and intermediate.
It is essential in the production of azo pigments and dyes. Its reactivity makes it a foundational building block for colorant chemistry across printing, textile, and coatings industries.
In pigment manufacturing, BONA is reacted with diazonium salts to produce BON arylamide pigments. These include Pigment Red 48 and related lake pigments used in packaging inks and plastics.
These pigments are favored in coatings where heat stability and color strength are critical. Textile and leather processors use BONA-derived azo dyes for dyeing synthetic and natural fibers.
Consistent shade reproducibility across batch production is a key requirement for these applications. In pharmaceutical synthesis, it functions as an intermediate in the preparation of active compounds.
It is used for specialty chemicals requiring a hydroxylated naphthoic acid scaffold. Personal care formulators also source it for UV-stabilizing additive development in select cosmetic applications.
3-Hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid is supplied as an off-white to light tan crystalline powder. Technical and pharmaceutical-grade material is available with high purity specifications.
Purity typically ranges from 98% to 99%+ by HPLC. Packaging is offered in kilogram quantities through to bulk industrial supply to meet diverse manufacturing requirements.
