Oleth-50
Description
Oleth-50 (CAS 9004-98-2) is a high-ethoxylation oleyl alcohol ethoxylate produced by reacting oleyl alcohol with approximately 50 moles of ethylene oxide. Polyethylene glycol oleyl ether is a recognized alternative name used across formulation and procurement channels.
With its high HLB value, it functions primarily as a nonionic emulsifier, solubilizer, and rheology modifier in aqueous systems. In personal care formulations, it stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions in creams and lotions while contributing to a smooth, non-greasy texture.
Textile processors use it as an emulsifier and lubricant in fiber finishing baths, where it aids dye dispersion and improves fabric handle. In metalworking fluids, it helps stabilize emulsifiable cutting oil concentrates, keeping oil droplets uniformly dispersed.
This material is effective under high-dilution conditions common in industrial settings. Leather treatment formulations use it as a carrier and emulsifying agent to ensure even penetration of fatliquoring compounds during the tanning process.
Oleth-50 is typically supplied as a waxy solid or paste at ambient temperature, transitioning to a liquid when heated. Standard commercial grades are available for industrial and cosmetic applications to meet specific manufacturing needs.
Cosmetic-grade material is commonly produced to meet general purity expectations for personal care use. Packaging is typically offered in drums or IBCs for bulk industrial supply, ensuring safe transport and storage for large-scale operations.
