Bakuchiol
Description
Bakuchiol (CAS 10309-37-2), also marketed as Sytenol A, is a meroterpene phenol derived from Psoralea corylifolia seed extract. It functions as a plant-based active ingredient in cosmetic and personal care formulations. This compound is recognized for its retinol-like activity without the photosensitivity concerns associated with vitamin A derivatives. In skincare formulations, it is used as a retinol alternative in anti-aging serums and creams.
It is particularly effective in facial oils targeting fine lines and uneven skin tone within clean beauty and sensitive-skin product lines. It is also incorporated into suncare formulations for its antioxidant activity. This ingredient helps to stabilize UV-exposed skin and protect against oxidative stress from environmental exposure. Formulators use it in combination with conventional actives such as niacinamide or peptides.
Its compatibility with a broad pH range supports multi-active product development. In pharmaceutical topicals, it is evaluated as a functional ingredient in preparations targeting skin renewal and barrier support. The material is supplied as a pale yellow to amber viscous liquid. Standard commercial grades include cosmetic-grade and high-purity specifications, with leading market grades typically standardized to high purity.
Leading market grades are often standardized to ≥99% purity by HPLC. Bulk supply is available in kilogram and drum quantities to support both development-scale and commercial manufacturing needs.
