Lidocaine
Description
Lidocaine (CAS 137-58-6), also known by the trade name Xylocaine®, is a synthetic amino amide compound used as a local anesthetic and topical analgesic across pharmaceutical and personal care applications.
It functions by blocking nerve signal transmission, making it the active ingredient of choice in a broad range of prescription and OTC formulations. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it is formulated into injectable solutions.
These solutions are used for regional and local anesthesia in surgical, dental, and emergency care settings. Topical dosage forms including creams, gels, patches, and sprays rely on it as the active ingredient.
These products deliver surface-level pain and itch relief in both prescription and consumer OTC products. Personal care and cosmetic formulators incorporate it into numbing creams used ahead of aesthetic procedures.
Common uses include tattooing, laser treatments, and minor dermal interventions. It also appears as an active in combination formulations targeting premature ejaculation, hemorrhoid relief, and wound care.
The material is supplied as a white crystalline powder in both free base and hydrochloride salt forms. The hydrochloride is the preferred grade for aqueous injectable and topical formulations due to its water solubility.
Standard grades include USP, BP, and Ph.Eur., with API-grade material supported by full regulatory documentation. This ensures compliance for pharmaceutical procurement and large-scale manufacturing.
