Dicamba
Description
Dicamba (CAS 1918-00-9), also known as MDBA, is a selective benzoic acid herbicide used in commercial agriculture to control broadleaf weeds and woody plants. It functions by mimicking natural plant growth hormones.
This mechanism causes uncontrolled growth in susceptible species while leaving established grasses largely unaffected. Dicamba is applied in cereal grain crops including wheat, corn, and sorghum to suppress persistent weeds.
It is particularly effective against kochia, bindweed, and thistle that resist other herbicide classes. In dicamba-tolerant soybean and cotton programs, it serves as the active ingredient in pre-emergent formulations.
These products are designed for genetically modified crop systems. Turf management and non-crop land applications use the chemical to clear rights-of-way, pastures, and rangeland of invasive broadleaf vegetation.
It is also incorporated into combination herbicide products alongside active ingredients such as 2,4-D to broaden weed control spectrum. The product is supplied as a technical-grade acid and as formulated salts.
Most commonly, the dimethylamine and diglycolamine salt forms are used, which offer improved volatility profiles for field use. Technical material is available in bulk quantities for formulation by manufacturers.
Standard purity for technical grade typically falls at 97% or above, with specifications aligned to FAO/WHO quality standards. This ensures high performance and reliability for large-scale agricultural applications.
