Description

Carbon disulfide (CAS 75-15-0), also known as CS2 and carbon bisulphide, is a high-purity industrial solvent used across chemical manufacturing and analytical processes. Its exceptional solvating power for sulfur, phosphorus, and halogen compounds makes it a preferred extraction and reaction medium in specialty chemical production.

In agrochemical manufacturing, CS2 serves as a key intermediate in the synthesis of xanthates, dithiocarbamates, and thiuram-based fungicides and accelerators. Flavor and fragrance laboratories use it as a solvent for GC/MS headspace analysis and aroma extraction, enabling accurate identification of trace volatile compounds in food matrices.

In viscose rayon and cellophane production, it reacts with cellulose and sodium hydroxide to form cellulose xanthate, the basis of the wet-spinning process. Rubber processing operations also rely on CS2 as a solvent for sulfur compounds and accelerator blends during compounding and quality control testing.

Carbon disulfide is supplied as a clear liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk tanker quantities. Technical grade is the standard commercial form for most industrial uses. High-purity and reagent-grade specifications are available for analytical applications. Buyers should confirm purity thresholds and stabilizer content before purchase.

Physical Properties

Melting Point -111.5 °C
Boiling Point 46 °C @ Press: 760 Torr
Density 1.2632 g/cm³ @ Temp: 20 °C
Flash Point −29 °F
Appearance Carbon disulfide is a highly refractive, flammable liquid; which, in pure form has a sweet odor and in commercial and reagent grades has a foul smell. It can be detected by odor at about 1 ppm but the sense of smell fatigues rapidly and, therefore, odor does not serve as a good warning property.
Color ≤10(APHA)
Odor Cabbage-like odor detectable at 0.016 to 0.42 ppm (mean = 0.2 ppm)
Form Liquid
Water Solubility 2.9 g/L (20 ºC)
Vapor Pressure 5.83 psi ( 20 °C)
Refractive Index n 20/D 1.627(lit.)
